Probably not so much.
And that's the problem.
Democracy is by definition majoritarianism. A majority can do whatever it wants to minorities, and you can bet that politicians can always find a way to polarize most people against you. And given how little of the population usually votes in elections, the necessary number of people to form a "majority" isn't even more than half. Not that half of the population is some magical marker for being right.
Believe in gun rights? All the government and media needs is a mass shooting to take them away.
Believe in drug rights? You can be sure that most people will think: "Well I don't take drugs, so what do I care?"
On every issue, from gay rights, to security cameras on the streets and wiretapping in your home, you can be sure that there are enough people who want to take your freedoms away from you, or just don't care either way.
Unless you start standing up for the freedoms of others, even if those freedoms don't really affect you directly, then the State will find its way to erode everybody's rights, sooner or later.
"First they came for..."
You all know that quote. If you google those first four words there will probably be thousands of results. Just replace the groups with current issues, and all becomes clear.
Believe in gun rights? All the government and media needs is a mass shooting to take them away.
Stand up for the everyone's freedoms, or there won't be anyone left to stand up for yours.
